MAC Fluidline Eyeliner

After a disappointing experience with Stila's liquid eyeliner I thought I'd talk about an eyeliner I've relied on for literally years.  I used to struggle applying eyeliner so when I heard about MAC Fluidline being raved about when I was around 18 or 19 I saved my pennies and splurged on it.  Ever since that first day I tried it I've been wearing winged eyeliner and I thank MAC Fluidline for being so easy to use and thus letting me practice my skills over time.

MAC Fluidline is described as a "gel" but to me it's more like a paste.  You can use various brushes for it (which I'll get to in a moment) to create different looks.  It comes in quite a few colours and MAC also occassionally releases limited edition shades. It lasts through an 8 hour work day without any fading and comes off easily with a baby wipe at night.  One pot generally lasts me 6 months of frequent use.

Now onto brushes!  All of these do different styles of lines:
MAC #212 ($27.50): For simply lining the eyelid without a wing or lining your waterline.  This isn't my favourite but I thought I'd throw it in here.
Sephora #17 ($14): For doing a thin flick.
Sephora #23 ($20): For doing medium to thin flicks.  I'd recommend this to beginners as it's the easiest to use.  Benefit also sells a brush like this.
Cheap paint brush (Galeria #2 from Curry's Art Supplies): I think this was $5 and it works very similarily to the Sephora #17 for a fraction of the price.

The only other gel eyeliner I've tried is the Maybelline one which I hated.  I want to try the L'Oreal, Essence, and Sleek versions to see if they live up to MAC.

Availability: MAC, $18

  4. My go to is the Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner - and I love, love, love it! I agree the "bent" brush is by far the easiest to use, I also like the NYX B23 "all purpose".

    1. I've been tempted by the Bobbi Brown eyeliner but I'm afraid of liking it more since it's exspensive haha. I didn't know NYX even made brushes, thank you :)

  5. I loved the maybelline one in black. I splurge on the other colors of guideline, and just get my black liner from maybelline to save a few pennies. you are right about the cheap makeup brushes to use paint brushes. I do that all the time. and they last through washing better too!

    1. I know a lot of people loved the Maybelline one but it just didn't work for me :( I like my paint brushes better than the MAC eyeliner brushes I've tried!

    2. Me too! But I find and have an angled brush. I find it's like 50times easier to apply and do the flick with an angled bristle brush, not the handle itself is angled.

  6. I agree it's such a great eyeliner! I have it in Blitz & Glitz and love how smooth the application is. I think I even like it better than my clinique gel liner - I find the MAC one is smoother in application and dries a bit slower which makes it easier to blend. Great review Christine!

    1. Yeah it's really easy to clean up a mistake with this since it dries just fast enough. Thanks Annick :)

  7. This looks interesting! I am actually not a huge fan of eyeliner, maybe because I can never apply it properly ;0

  8. I've heard a lot of good things about this gel liner but i've also heard that it dries out quite easy in the pot.

    1. I've never had that problem but I use it almost everyday so I use it up really quickly. My mum has had that problem though and adds oil to it to make it creamy again.

  11. Interesting that you hated the Maybelline one. I've had it for a while now and it doesn't seem to bother me, but then again I've never tried the MAC Fluidline. Might it be worth investing in?

  12. This looks a lot like the Smashbox eye liner I used to use, makes me think I should buy that one again because I had forgotten about it until seeing your post. I used a Smashbox brush a lot like your top MAC one, and always got a great line. So thanks for the post as you reminded me about something I used to love lol x
